McErlean to serve as President for TRA

Leading horseracing trade organisation in America has appointed Racing Vice-President for Penn National Gaming as its 35th leader.

Friday 25th February 2011

In America, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) industry representative has announced that Christopher McErlean from Penn National Gaming Incorporated has been elected as its latest President. The current Racing Vice-President for Penn National Gaming, McErlean was elected as the TRA’s 35th President on Tuesday at the group’s annual general meeting in New Orleans and is replacing Roy Arnold from Arlington Park. McErlean has been a member of TRA’s board since 1998 and joined Penn National Gaming in 2007 following a 15-year stint with the New Jersey Sports And Exposition Authority (NJSEA). “I am a racing fan and the combination of racing and business has always been my passion,” said McErlean. “Helping lead the trade organisation representing the finest racetracks in North America is indeed an honour. There is no doubt that the business of horseracing is extremely challenged and, despite the many issues at our individual local levels, there are common goals and objectives that we all share in attempting to move our businesses forward.” During his time with the NJSEA, McErlean held positions in the operations, marketing and simulcasting departments before ultimately being appointed Racing Operations Vice-President for the Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands tracks. Before this, he worked as Executive Assistant for Harness Tracks of America under the tutelage of Stan Bergstein and interned at Brandywine Raceway while studying at the University of Scranton and Fairleigh Dickinson University. The TRA also revealed that Craig Fravel from Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California, has been elected as one of its Vice-Presidents to serve alongside Randall Sampson of Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. In addition, Scott Wells, the President and General Manager for Remington Park of Oklahoma City, has been appointed Secretary while William Fasy was re-elected Treasurer alongside Christopher Scherf as Executive Vice-President.
