Turkey Gets Tough on online Gambling
Turkish government threatens online gamblers
Thursday 17th March 2005
Turkey has vowed to get tough with online gambling, threatening this week to prosecute ‘any individual’ flouting anti-gambling laws with ‘fines or imprisonment’. This would seem to suggest that the state is prepared to go against, not just gambling operators, but individual gamblers as well.
A bill has been drawn up with the aim of curbing the tide of online gaming in the country. It includes measures to block gambling sites with technology, prohibit all online gambling advertising and even suggests tracing individual gamblers through their credit card histories. Civil liberty issues aside, for a so country eager to join the EU, a body that has recently ruled in favour of cross-border online gaming, the move would seem puzzling.
The bill is part of an effort to recognize the structure of the Turkish National Lottery Administration (MPÝ).
