Betfair appoints Vemulapalli to lead mobile push

Former Yahoo! innovator has been hired as leading online casino and sportsbook operator’s Mobile Engineering Vice-President.

Monday 30th May 2011

Leading online casino and sportsbook operator Betfair has appointed industry veteran and innovator Raj Vemulapalli to serve as its Mobile Engineering Vice-President. Betfair revealed that Vemulapalli served until recently as the Head of Engineering for Yahoo! and was one of the co-founders of the computer software firm’s Real Time Communications division. His new role will see him help to drive the operator’s mobile strategy by developing innovative mobile products in addition to overseeing the building of a new mobile centre of excellence in Silicon Valley, California. “Betfair is a technology company that invented the betting exchange a decade ago and is now reinventing mobile betting and gaming,” said Vemulapalli. “I am excited to be driving Betfair's mobile strategy, products and platforms at a time when consumers are increasingly turning to mobile.” With over eleven years at Yahoo!, Betfair stated that Vemulapalli ‘pioneered the development of some of the most used products in the world’ including Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Mobile Messaging and Yahoo! Chat as well as several ‘communications platforms’. He has filed six patents covering real-time messaging applications and helped to lead Yahoo! Messenger and Yahoo! Mobile Messenger to 280 million monthly active users and $150 million in annual revenues. “Mobile is a hugely important channel for us and I am delighted that Raj has decided to join Betfair at a time where there is a real opportunity to reinforce our market-leading position in the mobile space,” said Tony McAlister, Chief Technology Officer for Betfair. “Raj has a track record of delivering global products, building teams and has experience managing open APIs, a development route that is significant to our mobile strategy going forward.”
