GTECH secures Columbia extension

American gaming technology and services firm will continue to operate the Baloto online lottery game for another five years.

Wednesday 29th June 2011

American gaming technology and services firm GTECH Corporation has secured a five-year extension to its private operator contract to operate the Baloto online lottery game for Columbia’s ETESA En Liquidacion. A subsidiary of Italian lottery and gaming giant Gruppo Lottomatica SpA, GTECH revealed that ETESA En Liquidacion is the agency responsible for authorising gaming operations throughout Colombia with this most recent deal obtained following a public bidding process over the first semester of 2011. “The award of this new private operator contract is evidence of GTECH’s continued ability to successfully manage all aspects of the online lottery operations for governments who choose to outsource these responsibilities,” said Jaymin Patel, President and Chief Executive Officer for GTECH. “Over ten years ago, GTECH was a pioneer in working with the Colombian government to help bring international standards of transparency and accountability to the Colombian gaming market. We are proud of our extensive footprint in the Latin American and Caribbean marketplace that we have developed over the last 25 years and this award reinforces GTECH’s market leadership in this region.” GTECH stated that it secured a ten-year concession in December of 1999 to operate Baloto in Columbia with the first draw held just over a year later. This latest contract will see the Providence-based firm transfer 32.32 percent of all sales from the online lottery game back to the health care sector of the South American nation while also extending its point-of-sale network to 10,000 with plans to include new innovations in order to invigorate growth and increase impact. “We are pleased to have been named the winner of this extremely competitive process,” said Alvaro Gomez, President for GTECH Columbia. ”We look forward to furthering our partnership with the Colombian government to responsibly manage its lottery operations and generate revenues for important good causes. This new contract brings us one step closer to building a modern and efficient gaming industry in Colombia, which helps fund health care for all Colombians.” GTECH declared that its latest deal will commence in April with estimated revenues expected to reach $55 million.
