Internet competitions join the rich list of poker tournaments

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) has joined the best non-web poker tournaments in offering the highest prizes and attracting the most players.
This year’s event was attended by the second-largest number of players (10,085) and awarded the sixth-highest prize pool ($6,002,300), meaning the championship, hosted by Pokerstars.com, now competes with the biggest television tournaments.
In fact, three of the four events with the largest number of entrants this year were WCOOP events. Only the main event of the World Series of Poker attracted more players.
The total prize pool for the main WCOOP competition alone exceeded $2 million — a higher figure than many of the biggest poker events shown on television. No internet-based competition of any kind has ever awarded such a large cash prize. 27 players won $10,000 or more in the main event.
