Woodbine appoints second Vice-Chairman

Respected horseracing figure James Lawson is set to assist leading Canadian casino and racetrack operator in growing its business.

Canadian casino and racetrack operator Woodbine Entertainment Group has announced that it has appointed James Lawson to the post of Vice-Chairman where he will serve alongside existing Vice-Chairman Clay Horner. Toronto-based Woodbine is also the firm behind the HorsePlayer Interactive online account wagering platform and revealed that Lawson has worked as a director since June of 2008 and sits on its Thoroughbred Racing Committee, Standardbred Racing Committee, Pension and Compensation Committee and Audit Committee. “I am pleased to take on the additional role of Vice-Chairman,” said Lawson. “I have a long held passion for this industry and I look forward to working more closely with the company's management team and board of directors as we work to ensure that Woodbine is able to meet the challenges and, importantly, seize the many opportunities.” Also the Chief Executive Officer for private Torontonian investment firm with substantial holdings in the manufacturing, real estate and hospitality industries Westerkirk Capital, Lawson additionally serves as Chairman for the Jockey Club of Canada with Woodbine stating that he is ‘active in the racing industry both as an owner and as the manager of Jim Dandy Stable’. “The Woodbine board has benefited immensely both from Jim's horseracing industry perspective as well as his significant leadership experience in various Canadian public and private corporations,” said David Willmot, Chairman for Woodbine. “As a Vice-Chairman, Jim will provide counsel and expertise at a critical time for our company. The horseracing and breeding industry is facing extraordinary challenges and Jim will play a vital role in helping us to navigate through the many difficult decisions that lie ahead.”
