Kelly named to Gambling Commission post

Chairman for the Committee on Standards in Public Life is to step down in order to lead British watchdog’s independent advisory body from April.

Friday 28th December 2012

The British government’s Gambling Commission watchdog has announced that Sir Christopher Kelly will succeed Sir Brian Pomeroy as Chairman for its independent Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB). Kelly currently serves as Chairman for The King's Fund, the TPO Foundation and the Committee on Standards in Public Life but will be stepping down in March in order to assume his post with the RGSB from April. The RGSB works with the Responsible Gambling Trust fundraising and distribution body and advises the Gambling Commission and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the necessary research, education and treatment components for a national responsible gambling strategy. “I am very pleased to welcome Sir Christopher as the new Chairman of the RGSB,” said Philip Graf, Chairman for the Gambling Commission. “His wealth of experience in different sectors will be invaluable as the RGSB continues to refine its research, education and harm prevention strategy and to deliver authoritative, independent advice to the Gambling Commission.” The Gambling Commission revealed that Kelly worked in Her Majesty’s Treasury from 1970 to 1995 before leaving to serve as Policy Board Chairman at the Department of Social Security for two years. He was then Permanent Secretary to the Department of Health ahead of a nine-year stint as Chairman for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. “Our aim is to ensure that when people gamble they do so safely but, where problems occur, escalation of harm is prevented and appropriate treatment provided,” said Kelly. “I am delighted to be succeeding Brian Pomeroy in this important role and to have the opportunity to play a part in continuing to develop the strategy toward responsible gambling.”
