Machiavelli and Poker: Learn to Dominate Your Opposition

Machiavelli and Poker: Learn to Dominate Your Opposition

Thursday 23rd March 2006

If you are a fan of analysing every move you make in a poker game, as well as Italian Renaissance history and literature, then it looks like you’re in for a treat. Poker author David Apostolico, whose previous book Tournament Poker applied Sun Tzu’s, ‘The Art of War’ to playing on the baize, has just released his latest piece of work, Machiavellian Poker Strategy.

Based on the works, life and times of Italian politician and schemer Niccolo Machiavelli, the book aims to teach players how to be devious at the table and win as much as possible. The idea, apparently, is to place the player in the mindset of a political or military leader, encouraging them to think in terms of tactics to take the game away from their opponents. Basically, if you lead from the front, you should win. Sadly, the Italian never imparted his knowledge on what to do when dealt a bad hand. Nevertheless, the old advice still seems to apply: fold or bluff like the wind.
