Charity Poker Games Raise Ire of Local Authorities
Charity Poker Games Raise Ire of Local Authorities
Thursday 30th March 2006
Charity poker just can’t seem to get out of the headlines at the moment. This time, rather than philanthropist pros holding vast tourneys in Vegas, it’s the interpretation of a city law that’s causing problems.
Dixon City Council have said that the complaints they have received about charity games in the city will have to go to State level to be considered by the District Attorney. Local residents say that even though poker is being played to raise funds for good causes, it’s still illegal.
This is much to the disgust of Greg Coppes, a Dixon resident who has raised over $30,000 for non-profit teenage organisations. He believes that he’s doing nothing wrong and despite the ruling, is going to continue to hold tournaments. In his words, he’s going to, “…finish what I started.” Sounds like fighting talk, even if some parents are worried what example it’s setting their kids. Probably best to try and play any planned games of charity poker outside the Dixon City limits for the foreseeable future.
