Puerto Rico Classic Handicaps Pro Poker Players

Puerto Rico Classic Handicaps Pro Poker Players

Monday 8th May 2006

The long reach of televised poker is set to stretch further out of the United States this week as Puerto Rico is set to host its first televised poker tourney. The tournament, known simply as the Puerto Rico classic, features a host of the world’s top poker pros taking part including Antonio Esfandiari, Steve Dannenmann and Tuan Le. The big boys are set to fight it out for the big money, although they will be joined by satellite winners and locals who are able to muster the $5,000 buy-in.

The event, at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan, starts with a unique handicap tournament, in which the ten participating pros begin the game with 25% less chips than everyone else. Robert Williamson III, the co-host of Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker, who will be one of the ten, says that the chip deficit won’t be an issue. “Although the starting chips may be a small obstacle, I am always up for a challenge. I will play, talk or drink them out of their money,” he said.

Proceedings start on May 10 and can be seen on Superstation WGN at 10pm on Fridays.
