Poker Shows Its Charitable Side

Poker Shows Its Charitable Side

Wednesday 17th May 2006

For those who believe that poker is more than just taking friends’ money and lauding it in their faces, two upcoming tournaments could be just the ticket. The Bluff City Texas Hold 'Em Open, in Tunica, MS and the 'Full Tilt Bad Beat On Cancer Fundraiser' in LA will both focus attention on poker’s ability to show itself as a philanthropic game. The Bluff City Open, at the Grand Casino in Tunica, takea place over May 20-21, with over 500 players buying seats at $100 a time. The aim is raise up to $100,000 for United Cerebral Palsy, a charity covering Tennessee and Mississippi.

Over in LA meanwhile, Phil Gordon will be hosting the “Bad Beat On Cancer Fundraiser”, aiming to tackle all forms of cancer. Since 1985, it has raised over $74 million. Gordon will be joined by celebrities including Hank Azaria, Josh Molina and Shannon Elizabeth for a gala dinner, followed by an auction. Gordon will put himself and Annie Duke on the block, giving buyers the chance to play a game of heads up with a top pro, as well as picking up some tips. Who said poker was all about winning?
