Internet Gambling Study Set For Release

More big names to join Calvin Ayre and Magic Johnson

Tuesday 9th May 2006

A new survey by a Washington DC-based casino trade group, who has already advocated a congressional study into the matter, suggests that the gambling industry should be regulated rather than banned.

The Justice Department and gambling website operators have quarrelled about the legality of online gambling, but major U.S. gambling companies have mostly stayed out of the business because of the 1961 Wire Act.

Half of those polled by the survey said ‘as far as they know online betting is legal’. Just 19 percent of those polled indicate they know, or will admit, that betting online is illegal.

According to the survey, the average internet gambler in the U.S. is male, 31 and college educated and are more affluent than gamblers at traditional casino - one in five earns more than $100,000 annually,

AGA President/CEO Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. said in a recent announcement on Internet gambling, “Millions of Americans currently gamble online and they will continue to do so. Many nations, including Great Britain, are in the process of legalizing, regulating and taxing online gambling.”
