Responsibility in Gambling Trust Announce New Chairman

John Greenway, MP will succeed Sir David Durie on 5th May

Monday 8th May 2006

The Trustees of the Responsibility in Gambling Trust are delighted to announce that they have appointed Mr John Greenway, MP as their new chairman. Mr Greenway will succeed Sir David Durie on 5th May. The Trustees have expressed their thanks to Sir David for his diligence and commitment to the charity.

As an MP, John Greenway has demonstrated both a professional and personal interest in matters pertaining to the gambling and racing worlds. The robust and independent manner of his chairmanship in 2004 of the All Party Scrutiny Committee earned him the respect of those on all sides of the debate.

John Greenway has been MP for Ryedale since 1987. He has taken a special interest in gambling issues over a long period, first as a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee (1987 – 1997) and as shadow Minister for Gambling, both in Home Affairs (1997 – 2000) and Culture, Media & Sport (2000 – 2003). Mr Greenway resigned from the Conservative frontbench in the summer of 2003 to take up the Chair of the pre-legislative Scrutiny Committee for the draft Gambling Bill.

John Greenway said ‘As the new Gambling Act now takes effect, the RIGT has a vital role in facilitating a more focussed effort to address problem gambling issues. I look forward very much to working with the trustees, who themselves have vast experience of the industry, as well as with the Gambling Commission to help prevent problem gambling and to provide education, advice and treatment for those who develop a gambling problem.’

The retiring Chairman, Sir David Durie, said ‘I very much welcome John Greenway’s appointment as my successor. With his extensive knowledge of the issues surrounding problem gambling, he is well placed to ensure that the Trust really does achieve its aim of making it less likely that people will become problem gamblers and more likely that those who do will be able to seek and secure effective help. I wish him and the Trust well.’
