Internet sportsbooks took a hammering as a result of Chantelle winning UK Celebrity Big Brother 2006.
Chantelle, of Essex, was the only non-celebrity to enter the house and was rubbing shoulders with George Galloway, Michael Barrymore and Dennis Rodman.
Unsurprisingly, as a complete unknown when the show started, Chantelle was not expected to go very far – her initial odds of 16/1 reflected as much. Nonetheless, many punters still tried their luck on the boisterous blonde as it became more and more evident that her antics were fast becoming a crowd pleaser. By the end of the series, Chantelle’s odds had plummeted to 1/7.
William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said, “Chantelle cost us a fortune when she was backed from an original 16/1 right down to 1/7. However, the show was a very successful betting event an we estimate that the best part of £2 million was gambled in total'.
