Hennigan the hero at Borgata Poker Classic

Wednesday 31st January 2007

Pro poker player John Hennigan took down the WPT Poker Classic in Borgata yesterday to bag nearly $2 million and his first WPT title.

In a thrilling final hand against amateur Chuck Kelly, Kelly accidentally showed his hole cards after the turn. The river made Kelly his full house but Hennigan moved all in with a higher full house and Kelly called what he thought was a bluff. Despite Kelly’s mistake, he takes home $849,000.

“This is probably the biggest. It’s the biggest field I’ve ever beaten. It’s a couple hundred more people and that’s a huge difference. It’s great to win a marathon, it’ll build my confidence for the future, and it’s obviously the most I’ve ever won,” said a delighted Hennigan.

For Hennigan, it was the first time he’d made a final table since the first World Poker Tour. His previous best finish was 2nd place in last year’s WSOP No Limit Draw Event. Considered by many one of the best poker players in the world, it was the biggest victory of his career, both in terms of winnings and the field he defeated.

The $10,000 buy-in WPT Borgata Poker Classic saw 600 of the world’s top players battle it out including Phil Ivey, Padraig Parkinson and Brit Jon Gale, who finished 3rd.
