Tasmania stakes $300,000 on gambling study

Tuesday 22nd May 2007

In the first study of its kind, the Tasmanian government will invest $300,000 into a study of gambling, looking at both sides of the coin.

The South Australian Centre for Economic Studies will undertake the research, which will look at the social and economic impacts of gambling in Tasmania, according to the Mercury.

Tasmanian treasurer Michael Aird said the research would look at "the positives and the negatives" of gambling when the study begins next month.

Social and financial impacts will be taken into account, including how the government and tourist industry is affected. Recreation, economic development and employment will also be considered.

Yet the opposition party has said not enough has been invested in the unique study, which should be more intensive.

However the Tasmanian government has agreed to undertake a similar review every three years.

"Consultation with the Tasmanian community will be an essential and integral element of the study and written submissions will be called for as part of the consultation process," Mr Aird commented.
