'Poker Peek' a total flop

Thursday 7th June 2007

The new 'Poker Peek' playing cards that were introduced to this year's World Series of Poker have been withdrawn after a number of complaints that they were confusing.

Although the decks had been hailed as an innovation within poker, with corners that were easy to turn up to take a peek at the face, the cards were criticised for having tiny numbers and suits that were hard to distinguish.

Players complained that the six and the nine were particularly difficult to tell apart and that the suits were too small.

After players demanded refunds of entry fees and some poker pros even threatening not to play, the United States Playing Card Company, which struck a deal on the cards with WSOP organisers Harrah's, announced that it would replace the decks.

Players will now finish the tournament using the more traditional Kem cards, which are popular with poker pros and widely-used throughout Las Vegas casinos.
