Greg Hopkins the Champ in WSOP $2000 Pot Limit Event

Anchorage man sees off 600 players to bag bracelet

Tuesday 26th June 2007

Greg Hopkins has won the $2,000 pot limit hold ‘em event at the World Series of Poker. Greg saw off nearly 600 other players to take home over a quarter of a million dollars.

Some members of the poker community are saying that he is more interested in finding his ‘precious’, but the 41-year-old Anchorage man deserves better than ‘Gollum’ for a poker name. Hopkins has been looking for a WSOP bracelet for the last 13 years, and when asked how it felt to have one, he bowed his head when he replied,

“You have no idea how good this moment feels.'

Elsewhere, the winner of the $1,500 buy-in, re-buy Pot Limit Hold'em event was Irishman luxury golf course owner Alan Smurfit. On the back of success in numerous cash tournaments, Smurfit decided to attempt the WSOP. The 64-year-old retiree will go back to Miami victorious after only one other attempt. The win should be particularly sweet because he began the final table way, way down in chips but then built up his stack over a 167 hand, 9 hour marathon.

Ryan Young won the $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament. The 23-year old has only played poker for four years but wants to make the move from internet player to circuit pro. Touchingly, Young dedicated the win to his Grandmother who was seriously ill in hospital on Ryan’s final day of play.
