Rules News From the World Series of Poker

Flash folds and Charity Lounges, Vegas gears up for the biggest WSOP ever

Thursday 17th May 2007

The rule book for this year’s World Series of Poker, written by the tournament director, Jack Effel, is to clampdown on players showing one of their hidden cards as a means of psyching out their opponent. Despite being allowed in many games, showing one or both of your cards can also be considered a fold. A flashed hole card came back to haunt last year’s winner Jamie ‘hands up’ Gold.

The official line, as per Rule No. 45, is that, ``A player exposing his or her cards with action pending may incur a penalty, but will not have a dead hand. The penalty will begin at the end of the hand.''

The penalty itself will depend on the situation in which the flash occurred, but is expected to be exclusion from playing a number of subsequent hands. The key thing about rule 45, is that once a card has been shown, both hole cards must be turned face up for the remainder of the hand.

The other WSOP news is that there will be a VIP lounge for players who make a contribution of $1,000 more to the Nevada Cancer Institute. It will be open 23 hours a day for the duration of the tournament and access also comes with parking privileges.
