Rock Paper Scissors Tourney Winners Scoops $50K

Jamie Langride wins second annual USA Rock Paper Scissors tournament in Las Vegas

Tuesday 15th May 2007

Jamie Langride is the rock paper scissors name right now, having won the second annual USA Rock Paper Scissors, tournament in Las Vegas. Over three hundred contestants were hoping for the crown and its $50,000 prize money. Professional poker player Phil Gordon was head referee at the event, which will be broadcast by ESPN.

Ray Scott, who came to Vegas having won the New Hampshire title, said. “I don’t have a strategy. I can’t be thinking ‘what’s he gonna throw,’ I just throw something.” Being something of a showman, Scott was reported to have agonised about his costume, which, during the qualifiers, aped that of a wrestler, complete with a brow-mopping coach in the form of his daughter. The wrestling analogy looks set to play, as the final rounds were held in a ring.

For the uninitiated rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper and paper beats stone. Each bout consists of three throws. Some might say that a poker players predictive eye should win out over the ‘just throw something strategy’, but Phill Gordon challenged Aaron Rich, the tournament’s only sponsored player to a bout at the end of the tournament and lost $5,000.
