White List Approval Welcomed by Alderney and Isle of Man

The UK white list heralded as pivotal to both jurisdictions

Thursday 9th August 2007

The two sole jurisdictions to have been approved exemption from the impending UK advertising ban for companies operating in jurisdictions outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), have spoken publically of their delight at the announcement.

The Isle of Man and Alderney were the only jurisdictions to be recognised by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, for having satisfactory measures in place to meet the new UK regulatory standards which will be enforced under the 2005 Gambling Act, which comes into effect on September 1.

David Cretney MHK, Minister for the Isle of Man Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), said, “This is fantastic news and a real boon for the Isle of Man. We are one of just two jurisdictions that are now part of the white list, reflecting the UK’s recognition of the Island as a quality jurisdiction.”

Garth Kimber, head of e-Gaming development at DTI, added, “The UK white list is a crucial benefit to the Isle of Man. Our inclusion clearly demonstrates that as well as being commercially and technologically attractive the Isle of Man has established and maintained good standards of legislation, regulation and probity similar to those required by the UK in their jurisdiction.

Alderney embraced the news by announcing that they had always been quietly optimistic of getting on the list having shared similar values to the UK. Head of E-Commerce Development for Alderney, Robin Le Prevost added, “We are delighted to be on the List. It is notable that the statement infers that we were not required to alter or amend our regulations to meet the very high criteria and that is satisfying,” he said.

“The White List issue adds an important measure of recognition to our regime and on top of a respected and clearly workable regulatory environment we already offer a commercial framework which brings enormous efficiencies to operators wanting to access Europe or the wider global markets.”
