Netherlands Antilles Confident of UK White Listing

Curacao government hoping for rapid addition to DCMS white list

Monday 13th August 2007

The government of Netherlands Antilles has released an official statement regarding its position on the Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) decision not to grant it entry onto its provisional white list ahead of the introduction of the Gambling Act 2005 on September 1.

The Act will exclude all online gaming operators operating in jurisdictions outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) from advertising in the UK. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the white list currently contains only two names, Alderney and the Isle of Man, although other jurisdictions, such as Costa Rica remain under review.

The official line from the Netherlands Antilles is one of optimism ahead of the implementation of new legislations in the region which is hoped to meet the approval of the UK DCMS, which has already been working in conjunction with the Curacao government.

The UK’s position has provided some cause for optimism, with an official letter from the DCMS stating: “We would be willing to receive a further representation from you and consider the case again when that legislation is in place.”

It is hoped that the pending legislation will be ready in time for the New Year, with the official timeline suggesting a December date for completion.
