Online Betting For Magazine Awards Halted

World Series odds shaken up after off-season trading finishes

Monday 5th December 2005

Sportsbook.com has halted wagering on Time Magazine's ‘Person of the Year’ and Sports Illustrated's ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ after suspicious betting activity was noticed.

Investigations by Sportsbook.com ascertained that employees of a PR company that list Time Warner – the owner of both magazines – as a client, had placed the maximum allowable wagers on the outcome of the ‘Person of the Year’ award.

This incident followed similar suspicious betting activity on the 2005 recipient of Sports Illustrated's ‘Sportsperson of the Year’. Numerous wagers were placed on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as the winner, shortly before a leak emerged that Tom Brady would, in fact, be this year's winner.

Peter Childs, odds maker at Sportsbook.com said, ‘We have to close these events not only to stop these few bettors with inside information, but to protect the thousands of other bettors who will wager on this without knowing the outcome. We will, however, honour all bets made until we were forced to close the betting.’
