Misery Continues for Embattled Sportsbook

WagerOnFootball.com updates for the 2006/7 NFL and NCAA seasons

Friday 1st September 2006

The federal judge presiding over the BetOnSports case has extended an order preventing the indicted online gaming company from taking bets in the United States for further 30 days.

The order, which was due to expire today at the request of US prosecutors pursuing tax cases against the company, was extended by Judge Carol Jackson of the US District Court. At yesterday’s hearing, prosecutors declared that they were still in the process of serving legal notice of the indictment on the company and expected fruition in London within a week.

The company and a dozen executives, several from related companies in Florida, are the subject of a 22-count indictment alleging that the London-based company failed to pay billions of dollars in excise taxes.

CEO David Carruthers was arrested by authorities in Texas and later released on bail ($1 million), sparking panic in the online gaming industry. BetOnSports swiftly fired Carruthers, as well as shutting down its US facing operations in Antigua and Costa Rica.

The now dethroned BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers is scheduled in court on Tuesday for an evidentiary hearing.
