Couple charged with poker robbery
Thursday 31st January 2008
Two men have been formally charged with robbing a US man of his poker winnings after he cashed in at the Aussies Millions Poker Tournament in Melbourne.
After two search warrants were issued, last night Dwayne Johnstone, 32, of St Albans, and Vhyharn Arumughasamu, 27, from Wheeler's Hill were arrested.
The couple appeared in an out of sessions hearing overnight, both charged with one count of armed robbery with a knife.
Jason Potter, from Oklahoma, was the unfortunate victim of the attack, which saw him robbed of his $30,000 winnings as he was on his way back to the hotel following the end of the game.
Before he could reach his accommodation in central Melbourne, he was approached from behind on Spencer Street bridge.
Just 50 metres from the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Mr Potter claims a man ran up behind him, hit him around the back of the head and threatened him at knifepoint to hand over his money.
The incident occurred on January 21st and now the men will appear in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court.
