GamCare Calls for Advertising Code of Conduct

Charity seeks restrictions on Internet ads in the UK

Friday 13th August 2004

In effort to promote responsible gaming, GamCare, has announced there should be tighter restrictions on Internet gambling advertising in the United Kingdom and that there should be the same constraints that have been brought in for the adult website Industry. The charity said it is looking to speak to the Home Office regarding its concerns.

'There should be a code of conduct,' Michael Smeaton, remote gambling specialist for the charity told New Media Age. 'I think pop-ups, for example, are inappropriate.’

Recently the Interactive Gaming Council drew up its own advertising Code of Practise, warning casinos that use promotional methods such as pop-ups and spam that they are giving the industry a bad name and adding fuel to the arguments of anti-gambling movements.

The IGC’s Rick Smith said recently, “Spam often originates from a third-party marketing company or affiliate rather than the gaming operator, but regardless of the source, spam needlessly alienates many consumers who would otherwise bear no ill will to online gaming.”
