Boris Becker has announced that he is keen on recruiting other former tennis stars to the poker table following his sponsorship deal with PokerStars.com to participate online and in live tournaments.
Interviewed in Germany’s daily Die Welt newspaper, the 40-year-old three-time Wimbledon champion stated that he learned to play poker while on the tennis circuit, especially in London during the rain breaks.
'I have already been playing intensively since last year,' said the German.
'What fascinates me about poker is the psychology. What is my opponent thinking of me and what do I think of him?
'I would like to know how people like Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl or even Jimmy Connors manage to keep their cool at poker.'
Becker, who retired from tennis in June of 1999, stated that he is hoping to take part in Europe's grand poker final this April, which will bring together 800 professional players in Monte Carlo.
