Tennis To Ban Online Betting During Games

New steps could be taken as WTA integrity unit proceeds with study into gambling.

Friday 7th March 2008

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is planning a crackdown on the use of mobile telephones and laptop computers at big matches in the wake of growing reports of possible cheating.

Larry Scott, Chief Executive for the WTA, told South Africa’s The Star daily newspaper that the group is concerned about the use of telephones and laptops at tournaments that feature live commentary and gambling facilities and are seeking new ways to stamp it out.

'We don't think it's positive for the image of the sport to have people feeding information out for gambling,” said Scott.

“We will take further steps to crack down on that.”

Although he did not specify what steps might be taken, Scott did state that an event already had the right to deny access to anyone for disruptive or concerning behaviour or for anything that might bring a tournament into disrepute.

'The tournament can take a decision that someone who has clearly facilitated gambling should not be present,' said Scott.

He stated that the WTA’s new integrity unit is currently in the middle of a study and has been to several tournaments interviewing people from the world of tennis including media figures.

'They are going to put a report together on how we are applying the rules, policies and procedures and will make recommendations,” said Scott.

'In the meantime, there are a few steps that have already been taken. Someone was stopped from using a mobile for private dealings and a couple of spectators were kicked out in Antwerp. These are interim steps but, in terms of significant rule changes, that will only come with the details and what outside experts tell us.'
