Casino planned for NEC redevelopment

Wednesday 12th March 2008

The NEC Arena in Birmingham is set to receive a landmark tower as part of a £25 million makeover, it has emerged.

Birmingham City Council's cabinet approved the revamp scheme yesterday and the venue is expected to be rebuilt over the next year.

The 28-year-old venue, which has hosted Crufts, Strictly Come Dancing and numerous music concerts, will include a "feature tower" visible from a distance, a new entrance, a dedicated VIP entrance and wider and better lit concourses.

New restaurants, cafes, bars and entertainment areas will also included in the development, along with improved lighting and new seating.

Some £17 billion has been earmarked for Birmingham's "urban renaissance", which is expected to generate up to 40,000 jobs within the next ten years.

"We are announcing an annual £15 million programme - £10 million from the city council and £5 million from our partners in the private sector to improve the public realm,"Council leader Mike Whitby said.

The NEC is one of the UK's busiest venues and is visited by over one million people every year.
