Casino worker sues for flea bites

Monday 17th March 2008

An ex-casino worker is suing her employer after she got bitten by fleas and is trying to claim extensive damages thanks to an ancient law.

According to the Courier Journal Tina Conder was bitten by fleas and became ill while working on the Caesars Indiana Casino and had to leave her job.

But because the casino is located on the Glory of Rome riverboat, Ms Conder's lawyers are seeking more money than would otherwise be offered by trying to prove that a federal maritime law applies to their client.

The 88-year-old Jones Act gives maritime workers more than standard state workman's compensation laws and because her lawyers claim Ms Conder was working on what was effectively a boat, the law should apply to her.

In 2003, Ms Conder became a dealer on Caesars' poker tables and liked her job so much that she often worked extra hours on the overnight shift.

"If it wasn't for the fleas, I loved the job", she told the newspaper.

Although the case continues, Ms Conder's lawyers say a victory could set a precedent in the way that workers on floating casinos are treated by law.
