The Concord Card Casino in Vienna saw Peter Gelencser, a 20-year-old trainee journalist from Budapest, Hungary win the PartyPoker.com European Challenge II this week. The event was a €3,000 + €150 buy-in tournament, and the 172 runners generated a prize pool of €516,000.
Gelenceser seems to enjoy the Austrian capital, having come third last year in the same event.
“I’m very happy,” said the Hungarian, “I was disappointed not to win last year but to win this time feels fantastic. I was in a strong position going into the final table but couldn’t help but think it would go the same way as last year. Thankfully, it didn’t – I had such fantastic support from the rail and am glad I didn’t let anybody down.”
Taking a 10:1 chip lead into heads-up, Gelenser was able to bear local professional Josef Klinger heads-up. Klinger made a valiant attempt to get back into the tournament, and managed to get himself almost level on chips, but the final hand saw the young journalist river a straight to win the title.
