Las Vegas style casino resorts plans advance in UK

Two venues are currently being planned for London

Tuesday 3rd August 2004

Following the UK government’s decision recently to pass legislation allowing the development of Las Vegas style casino-resorts, plans are getting underway for the development of such venues. It has been announced that a £2 billion redevelopment of an area in West London, White City, which will provide shopping and leisure facilities, is now set to also play host to one of the Vegas style gambling resorts.

While other UK locations such as Manchester and Blackpool are also looking to introduce large scale casino facilities to their areas, mainly to encourage tourism, another site in London is also looking likely to join in. The Millenium Dome in Greenwich, a government owned project which has been closed to the public for four years, is being sold off to developers. Plans include building shops, flats and offices. Now an agreement has been signed by Philip Anschutz, an American investor to add a casino to the site.

Sol Kerzner, previous owner of Sun City in South Africa is planning to invest £600 million in building a 600-bed hotel and casino, and has just signed the agreement with Anschutz, who is currently planning to build an arena for sports and music at the site. Kerzner already owns a casino resort in the Bahamas- called Atlantis it is a 2,300 bed hotel with the full range of casino facilities. The venue at Greenwich is expected to be similar but on a smaller scale, and will host all the traditional casino games tables, as well as slot machines, in line with the new allowance set by the government.
