Online Bookies Look to Issue their Own Bank Cards

Ukbetting are looking to take the initiative in fight against underage gambling

Monday 2nd August 2004

UKBetting said today that it is looking to take its business into the next phase of the fight against underage gambling, by issuing its very own bankcards. Director of Business, David Craven, told New Media Age that his company already has a deal in place with a card issuer and hopes to launch the scheme by the end of the year: ‘We're looking to have our own dedicated cards that wouldn't be issued to anyone under 18,' he said

This week the industry has been calling on banks to introduce coding in their debit cards so underage users can be easily identified. The calls followed a report by children’s charity NCH and GamCare, which suggested that there are flaws in the system which could potentially allow the legally underage to gamble online. Internet gaming sites hit back saying that the finger of accusation was unjustly pointed at them and that responsibility lies with banks who issue Solo cards to children as young as eleven.

Yesterday, the Carmen Group said they would withdraw the Solo method of payment in all its online casinos. Other operations have responded angrily to the report, calling it ‘alarmist’ and adding that there is no evidence that under-eighteens are gambling online at all.
