James Scullion Wins Irish Student Championship 2008
The Irish Students Championships in Dublin see a large field battle it out over a €18,000 prize pool
Wednesday 9th April 2008
Last weekend saw the Irish National Student Poker Championships take place in Dublin. With a total of 278 students getting out of bed to attend the event at the Regency Airport Hotel, the title went to James Scullion, a computer science student from Queens University in Belfast.
The event, which was sponsored by DevilfishPoker.com, was a €65 (+ €7 reg. fee) buy-in event, with dealers at every table: a poker-playing bargain. A total prize pool of €18,070 saw the final three agree a deal, with Scullion, David Downey and Paul Murphy net what a friend of Downey’s summarised as “Woahhh! four grand. That’s life changing money”.
When asked about how he would spend the winnings, Scullion replied “I’ll put some of it away, but probably use some to play similar sized buy-in events. I’ve never played in anything like this before or won anything like this before so its great.” Downey had come to the tournament with his three housemates, as well as some poker playing buddies.
Event organizer and tournament director Stephen McLean said, “I think all players, dealers and floor staff would agree that there was really a great atmosphere throughout the tournament. This is what poker should be all about, having fun, a good laugh and experiencing a really good competition.”
