ePassporte Reportedly Departing US
Online payment processor to discontinue deposit services citing American enforcement activity
Monday 14th April 2008
According to numerous industry reports over the weekend, California-based e-wallet service ePassporte is set to exit the United States online poker market.
Although no official announcement has yet been released by the Marina Del Rey-based firm, online news portal PokerNews.com has reported that the online payment processor has discontinued its deposit services for US-based players following what it called ‘a widespread investigation of Internet gambling including poker by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Southern New York’.
'Although we do not believe we have done anything illegal, we do not wish to be associated with anything that might be considered illegal by the United States Government,' read the statement reportedly issued to poker operators by ePassporte on Friday.
'We have received notice from ePassporte today that they are unable to continue to provide CakePoker.com with merchant e-wallet services,” read an e-mail reportedly sent to players at online casino CakePoker.com.
“We have since confirmed that this situation is not unique to CakePoker.com and is, in fact, industry-wide.'
'We have recently been notified by ePassporte that they are no longer able to facilitate deposits or withdrawals between ePassporte and FullTiltPoker.com player accounts,” read a communication released by online casino FullTiltPoker.com.
