Bonus MLB Play for Thursday

Revenues touch US$5.3 million for the quarter

Thursday 20th May 2004

MLB - Bonus on San Diego -119

- Line available at PinnacleSports.com

- Valdez & Vogelsong

- Listed Pitchers

- Game goes at 4:05 PM PST., 7:05 PM EST.

An interesting dichotomy has unfolded with Pittsburgh in 2004. Namely, the Pirates come into this contest a wallet-busting 4-12 (-$760) at home, but a wallet-fattening 13-9 (+$805) when on the road. For whatever reason, the Pirates have walked the planked at PNC Park—they have the worst home record in the Major Leagues right now—and have been a treasure chest when away. In true form, Lloyd McClendon’s bunch was swept in a double-header at this site to these very Padres yesterday. This actually drops Pittsburgh to a spotless 0-6 their last six as a host. Meanwhile, San Diego will enter tonight 23-17 (+$240) overall and 10-8 (+$170) on the road.

The fundamentals favor the visitor today as well. The Padres’ Valdez comes in with a 3.68 ERA and 1.145 WHIP. His team is 4-2 (+$170) when he takes the mound this season. On the other side of the equation, the Pirates’ Vogelsong will toe the rubber with a 6.16 ERA and 1.763 WHIP. His team is just 3-4 (-$40) in his seven season starts. Both clubs have solid bullpens, with an ever so slight edge to the host. However, the Padres hold a significant edge in the all important offensive categories. Consider that SD is averaging 5.2 runs and hitting .295 away from Petco Park this year. They are also 17-12 (+$290) against right handed starters. For their part, the Pirates are averaging an anemic 3.7 runs, hitting just .247 with a paltry .309 OBP when at home for the season.

We also have a few nice trends pointing to San Diego. Consider that Pittsburgh is just 1-6 (-$525) when priced as a home underdog of +125 or less thus far in 2004. Consider also that they are 2-9 (-$690) when priced between -125 and +125 at PNC this season. In addition, SD is 6-2 (+$395) their last eight trips to Pittsburgh. When all is said and done, SD has too many advantages for us to pass them up at this cheap price. Play the Padres.
