Esfandiari on top at EPT: Grand Final
Wednesday 16th April 2008
Iranian-born Antonio Esfandiari has risen to the top of the rankings after day three of the European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final.
The Magician leads the Monte Carlo event with a chip stack of 1,198,000, giving him a reasonable advantage over second-placed Robin Keston with 916,000.
Esfandiari is hunting for his first EPT title, which he would add to trophies already won from the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour.
There is still some stiff competition left in the field, however, and should he win he will first have to outlast the likes of Joe Hachem, Freddy Deeb, Isaac Baron and Johnny Lodden, who all made it through to day four.
Fortunately for the 29-year-old, he will no longer have to worry about Marcel Luske, Ted Lawson and Neil Channing, who failed to progress.
Perhaps an unlikely challenger left in the tournament is former Swedish football ace Tomas Brolin, who is already guaranteed prize money in excess of his only notable poker finish so far, when he won $17,710 for finishing 17th at the 2007 EPT: Prague.
