Brisk growth continues for Macau
Thursday 17th April 2008
Macau is moving even further away from Las Vegas in terms of revenue, according to the latest statistics.
The Chinese city has experienced growth of 62 per cent in the three-month period up to the end of March compared to the corresponding quarter from 2007, macauhub reports.
Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau's figures also reveal that of the $3.76 billion generated by the former colony during this time, approximately 69 per cent of it came from baccarat, which continues to dominate the region's casino games.
The prosperity of Macau, the world's largest gaming destination, contrasts with effects the global economic crisis appears to be having on its nearest rival Las Vegas, where MGM Mirage has just announced 400 job cuts and Crown Casinos has been forced to pull out of a development due to equity problems.
Both of these companies have a strong presence in China in the form of MGM Grand Macau and Crown Macau respectively.
