Finns Spend €50m on Online Poker
Report shows machines pay out more frequently to counter fall-off in attendance due to smoking ban.
Friday 18th April 2008
The Finnish news agency STT has suggested that Finnish poker players spending €50 million a year on poker sites run outside of the country. Veikkaus, which is the state-owned lottery and betting monopoly in Finland, feels that it could get some of that revenue for itself, a view which may see a review of Finnish policy.
“We could gather the majority of the revenue flowing out,” said Ilkka Juva, communications manager for Veikkaus. “Certainly not all of it, but two thirds of €50 million could be attainable.” Neighbouring Sweden has a state-owned company called Svenska Spel, who Veikkaus would use as a business model should the proposals come to fruition.
The STT news agency said recommendations for the reform of gambling in the country would be made around December.
