Iris de Balme wins Scottish Grand National
Monday 21st April 2008
Charlie Huxley scored the biggest win of his career on Saturday when he rode outsider Iris de Balme to victory in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr.
The young amateur jockey and his horse's triumph never looked in doubt and they romped home ahead of Halcon Genelardais in second. Third place went to Flintoff, with favourite Old Benny coming in fourth.
Iris de Balme had been 125/1 at bookmaker William Hill at one stage, but a flurry of wagers saw the horse come in to 66/1 at some betting shops at the start of the race.
Hill's spokesperson Kate Miller remarked: "Iris De Balme's victory on Saturday looked a cracking result for the firms, but in actual fact proved the exact opposite, with more money than usual being placed on an 80/1 shot."
One anonymous gambler managed to win £8,000 from Ms Miller's company after placing a free £100 bet on Iris de Balme when it was at 80/1.
