Mortensen in contention for second WPT Championship
Tuesday 22nd April 2008
Carlos Mortensen is in a strong position to be the first person ever to retain a World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship title after day two at the Bellagio.
The Spaniard has had a quiet 2008 and has yet to land in the money in a major tournament, but he is currently fifth in the provisional chip count with 371,600.
Mortensen won the WPT Championship last year, defeating Kirk Morrison in the heads-up to win close to $4 million.
He will perhaps have to play even better this week, however, as the field is one of the strongest in the history of poker.
This is backed up by the host of big names who failed to make it through to day three, including Phil Hellmuth, David Pham and about 15 more major tournament winners.
Card Player magazine commented: "Day two of the 2008 WPT Championship featured the most impressive field, pound-for-pound, that an open buy-in no-limit hold'em poker tournament has ever seen."
Robert Mizrachi is the unofficial chip leader on 523,200, a significant lead over Bryan Devonshire with 393,400.
