Poker Stars Come Out For Darfur
Sunday 11th May 2008
While it may be renowned as a cut throat industry it seems that even the stars of Poker have big hearts with a whole host of well known names making the effort to play in a charity event in aid of the troubled region of Darfur. Darfur is currently in the grip of a major civil war with millions forced to flee from their homes and hundreds of thousands dead.
Actor John Cheadle from the ‘Oceans 11’ movies led a crowd which also included Poker champ Annie Duke in a series of Poker tournaments known as ‘Ante Up For Africa’. All proceeds are going to the “Not On Our Watch” charitable organisation which was set up by Cheadle and his ‘Oceans 11’ co-stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon.
This is yet another example of how strong the Poker brand is throughout the world and while the industry and game are very competitive it was interesting to see everyone come together in the name of a great cause.
The tournaments were held at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino near Highland and it has been confirmed that San Manuel made an initial donation of $500,000 to the cause with more to follow from later events.
