Why Are Casinos Such An Easy Target?

Monday 12th May 2008

As news that the Michigan authorities are considering the outright banning of smoking in casinos continues to leak into the public domain many people are now starting to ask why casinos seem to be public enemy number one. Why are they becoming the easy target for authorities?

To many people it seems that while many authorities across the US continue to benefit from the substantial tax returns from casinos, they seem intent on pushing through laws which will reduce business. In reality there will always be a major area of society that is opposed to casinos and all that they stand for, so an attack on casinos is for many authorities is a vote winner, a way to increase their support.

Yet these voters are the same people who have benefitted for some time from the ever increasing tax income from this area of business. Were they complaining then? Where were the howls of protest when employment was on the up and state budgets were doing well?

The truth is that casinos are here to stay in one form or another although the banning of online casinos in the US has taken away some of the power the industry once held. What alternatives do they have? The online route is currently blocked and the recent reduction in economic activity in the US is hitting the industry hard.

Sitting ducks is a phrase which springs to mind......
