Victoria Cup triumph for Zaahid
Monday 12th May 2008
Saturday's big race at Ascot, the Victoria Cup, was won by Zaahid.
The Barry Hills-trained horse was ridden by his son Richard and narrowly beat out Al Khaleej to get the victory.
Zaahid and Al Khaleej were co-favourites going into the competition and rode alongside one another for much of the contest, while King of Dixie went out in front.
The two horses charged past him in the final furlong, with a late spurt from Zaahid enough to win the race by a neck.
Triumphant jockey Richard commented: "He's a really genuine horse. He's got better and better and when he put his head in front, you knew he wouldn't let anyone get by."
Zaahid's victory hands yet more silverware to the Hills stable, which has produced a host of thoroughbred winners over the years.
Sure Blade was one of Hills' most memorable runners, claiming the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and St James Palace Stakes in 1986.
