UK Flat Season Set For Major Revamp
Tuesday 13th May 2008
There are very strong rumours doing the rounds that major changes in the structure and promotion of the UK horse racing Flat season are under way. The move appears to have been prompted by both the British Horseracing Authority and Racing UK (a TV station dedicated to racing), both of whom are keen to grab the attention of the public.
There have been concerns for many years that the Flat season has nowhere near the profile of the Jump season, and while some may say that Jump racing is more exciting, this is not always the case. The main racecourses in the UK such as Ascot, Newmarket and York are set to meet over the next few weeks to discuss ideas for revamping the image of the Flat season.
One idea put forward may well result in some of the leading Flat races being rescheduled for Saturday’s in order to catch the prime time viewing and increase the profile of the sport. While there will be many traditionalists against such a move, there is a feeling the Flat racing needs to move with the times. Whatever happens it looks like once again TV and money seem to have taken over yet another of the UK’s traditional sporting pastimes.
