US Gaming Revenues Rise In 2007
Thursday 15th May 2008
The American Gaming Association (AGA) has announced that commercial casino revenues for 2007 rose 5.3% from the previous year to hit US$34 billion. Interestingly the AGA also confirmed that casino employment numbers fell by 2.3% in 2007 although the total figure employed in the industry is still in the region 360,000. However, it does look as though the industry is becoming a little more 'efficient' and possibly more automated in many places. So what does the future hold?
While it seems inevitable that casino revenues for 2008 will show a fall compared to last year, there are grave concerns about the number of people the industry employs. There are a number of total smoking bans coming into play over the next few months, something which would dramatically cut the footfall at casinos and lead to redundancies – at a time when the economy is suffering already.
Will the authorities possibly delay more laws which may affect the casino industry? Will the workers unions flex their muscles and call for strike action?
The next 12 months should be very interesting for the US casino industry, where many have enjoyed the good times of late. How will they react and how will they perform when the going gets a little tougher?
