MGM Grand Casino Stirs Up The Unions

Sunday 18th May 2008

While the Unions have only recently received the vote from casino workers at the MGM Grand Casino at Foxwoods in Ledyard, it seems that the management are not yet willing to introduce Union representation to the establishment. Despite the fact the workers have voted to have Union representation, the management have take them to court on a number of occasions stating that tribal laws do not allow such representation.

The Unions have decided to respond with a ‘visibility’ exercise which has seen many of the casino workers join a demonstration outside of the casino, both before and after their shifts. While the main purpose is to build up the profile of the Unions there are more pressing concerns about changes to the tipping policy of the casino. The Unions claim that the proposed changes will reduce the take home pay of members and see the casino take a bigger share.

Unions and casino management have been on a collision course for some time as the Unions seek to increase their exposure to the industry. They realise that there is money in the sector and they have the opportunity to fight on behalf of the workers, as well as increasing Union subscriptions along the way.
